There is always that one person you hear about making thousands of dollars each month through eBay. While eBay is easy money – no degree, business building, or a large amount of cash upfront required, it isn’t always easy to discover how to turn someone else’s junk into your well-padded bank account.
The difference between the unsuccessful eBayer and the one making a killing each month is simple – research.
How to Reasearch the Best Selling Items on EBay
First, pick a niche to sell. Do you love fashion and want to sell designer women’s clothing? Perhaps you want to tech parts or vintage bake ware. Whatever you choose, become an expert on it, know where to buy the items cheap, and know which items in that niche will make you the most profit.
I am always looking for kids’ items at the thrift store because they are always cheap and because that is how I find cute fashions for my own two girls. If I want to focus on just selling baby clothes, I would start off by doing research. Here’s how:
First, go to eBay and search “baby clothes.”
Then, select “sold listings” on the left-hand side of the computer screen.
Then filter by the highest price sold, and you will instantly have a list of the best-selling baby brands, styles, and designs.
As you can see from my example Sperry for baby, Gucci, Burberry, baby Air Jordan’s and Adidas Yeezy Boost are some of the top sellers.
In my many years of thrifting, I have come across one Burberry outfit and two pairs of Nike Baby Air Jordan’s, so while I would keep these on the top of my list, I would probably look for other brands that sell for $50-100. If you are wondering why those black fleece pants sold for so much, then we are in the same boat. Many times, I see outrageous, sold eBay items and all I can think is that it is some undercover drug trade. Just call me paranoid.
I recommend you scan the sold listings carefully and thoroughly. Adidas Yeezy Boost baby shoes sell well, but that doesn’t mean every pair of Adidas baby shoes sells well. Take note of colors, styles, and sizes. Some brands sell better in toddler size than they do for older children’s sizes.

Searching What to Sell on EBay When You Are Out Shopping
Once you have done your research, hit the thrift store to see if you can find something on your list. It might take several trips to find what you are looking for.
What if you are in the store and spot something unusual, but you aren’t sure if it is worth anything. This happened to me when I stumbled across a vintage looking Laker’s zip-up jumpsuit for babies. For these items, it is best to have the eBay app installed on your phone.
Just open up your eBay app, type in your item, and then select “sold listings.” If any have sold within the past month, you will know if it is selling at a good price or not. Be sure to see if the other listings are charging for shipping. If you have to pay $5 for an item and it is only selling for $10 with free shipping, then you might want to put that item back on the rack.
A Word About Holiday Items
Buying holiday items or off-season items can be harder to research since no one is buying a winter coat in the middle of July. However, if you know the brand is a good seller and the item is in impeccable shape and a classic style, then go ahead and buy it now.
I found a babyGap Spiderman sweater and vest for less than $2 each in the middle of summer. I knew that babyGap didn’t carry that style anymore. I also knew that little boys always love Spiderman and moms love hero fashion that is a little more fashionable than the graphic tees sold at Walmart and Target. So, I took a chance on it and made a quick $30 profit on the two the first week of September. I only had to store it for two months.
